Basics
VPN vs proxy: what is the difference?
A VPN and a proxy can both change how your traffic appears to websites, but they are not the same. The difference matters for privacy, DNS leaks, app coverage and troubleshooting.
Quick comparison
| Feature | VPN | Proxy |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic coverage | Often system wide | Usually app or browser specific |
| Encryption | Usually encrypts tunnel traffic | Depends on proxy type and app |
| DNS handling | May provide VPN DNS | May still use local DNS |
| Best use | Public Wi-Fi, privacy, routing | Simple app level routing |
When to use a VPN
Use a VPN when you want broader device protection, encrypted tunnel traffic and a consistent privacy setup across apps.
When a proxy may be enough
A proxy can be useful for a single app or a narrow testing task, but it is easier to misconfigure. Always check DNS and public IP results.
